CROSS-REFERENCE

Dollfus-Mieg & Cie (DMC), a French thread and fabric manufacturer from the 1700’s to the present day, started publishing needlework books in 1886 with Thérèse de Dillmont’s Encyclopédie des Ouvrage de Dames (Encyclopedia of Needlework), which is still in print today. DMC continued with many books edited by her niece, who used the same name.

This is a list of the early Bibliothèque DMC publications that were written or edited by the Dillmonts, along with links to scans of some of them. The designs were not, for the most part, created by the Dillmonts, but were extensive compilations of traditional needlework designs from all over the world, exquisitely reproduced, with just enough instruction for experienced needle workers to follow. Most of them assume that the reader already owns Encyclopedia of Needlework. Some publications included patterns to be used directly in making the needlework – printed on tracing paper for embroidery, on waxed linen for Irish Crochet lace, muslin for point lace, or white lines on soft black paper for needle lace. Many of the recommendations for specific thread colors used the same color codes that DMC uses today.

Most of the early books were published in three languages, and none of them have copyright dates. This list of titles comes from advertising in the backs of books we have. Our estimate of the earliest publishing date for each book comes from deciphering print-run codes, cross-referencing advertising in the books with dated price list inserts, and comparisons to books by other publishers in the same time periods. It’s a work in progress.
